Here’s an interesting new trick I found from Thurrott.com.

Using a batch file, you can configure Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool to download any version of Windows 10, not just the latest version.

The batch file is attributed to someone identified only as BAU, though there’s no link.

Follow these steps

First of all, download the batch file here. You can look at its source code as it’s a plain text file.

Next, download the Media Creation Tool from the Microsoft website and put it in the same folder as the batch file.

Then, open a Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and navigate to the folder with the batch file and the Media Creation Tool.

Then, run the following command: MediaCreationTool.bat

The batch file will run and a window will appear, letting you choose the version of the Windows 10 ISO to create.

Select the version you want, and the batch file will then run the Media Creation Tool, passing it the correct version to download.

Then, continue as usual.

Let us know if this works for you.

Today Microsoft released Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 19551 to Windows Insiders in the Fast ring.

What’s new in Build 19551.1005

We fixed an issue resulting in snipping not working on secondary monitors.

Thank you for reporting that the Optimize Drives Control Panel was incorrectly showing that optimization hadn’t run on some devices. We’ve fixed it in this build.

We’ve fixed an issue causing Remote Desktop Connection crashes when attempting to connect to multiple sessions

We’ve made a server-side fix to address the issue causing Narrator Home to crash when selecting the “What’s New” button in Narrator Home.

We fixed an issue that could result in the language defaults listed at the top of Language Settings unexpectedly being blank.

We’ve done some work to help address feedback reports that screenshots (WIN+Shift+S) pasted into Outlook would be unexpectedly large.

We fixed an issue where, if you’d changed the candidate pane font for the Pinyin IME, it would be reset back to default after you reboot your PC.

We fixed an issue resulting in the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon in the notification area sometimes unexpectedly drawing in white (making it unreadable) when using light theme.

Known issues with Build 19551.1005

BattlEye and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues due to changes in the operating system between some Insider Preview builds and certain versions of BattlEye anti-cheat software. To safeguard Insiders who might have these versions installed on their PC, we have applied a compatibility hold on these devices from being offered affected builds of Windows Insider Preview. See this article for details.

We are aware Narrator and NVDA users that seek the latest release of Microsoft Edge based on Chromium may experience some difficulty when navigating and reading certain web content. Narrator, NVDA and the Edge teams are aware of these issues. Users of legacy Microsoft Edge will not be affected.

The cloud recovery option for Reset this PC isn’t working on this build. Please use the local reinstall option when performing Reset this PC.

We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build.

We’re investigating reports that some Insiders are unable to update to newer builds with error 0x8007042b.

We’re looking into reports that some Insiders are unable to update to newer builds with error 0xc1900101.

We’re looking into reports of certain external USB 3.0 drives not responding with Start Code 10 after they’re attached.

The Documents section under Privacy has a broken icon (just a rectangle).

The IME candidate window for East Asian IMEs (Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and the Japanese IME) may not open sometimes. We are investigating your reports. As a workaround if you encounter this, please change the focus to another application or editing area and back to the original and try again. Alternatively, you can go to Task Manager and end the “TextInputHost.exe” task from the Details tab, and it should work afterwards.

Stay tuned for more.

What’s new in Build 19541

Location in-use icon update

Microsoft have updated the notification area icon for when an app is using your location. The new icon looks like this:

Displaying architecture in Task Manager

When using the Details tab in Task Manager, Microsoft have added a new option to show the architecture of each process.

You can add it by right-clicking on a column header, choosing Select Columns, and selecting Architecture from the list. In the Details tab of Task Manager, you can now add this Architecture option.

Cortana App Update

Bing Instant Answers and Timers are back online.

Microsoft continues to work on getting jokes back up and running.

Here are some example queries you can use with Hey Cortana or by typing into Cortana:

Set a timer for 10 minutes

When was the Space Needle built?

Cortana giving you Bing Instant Answers and Timers once again.

The Windows 10 Spring Creators Update is right around the corner, with buzz among the bees that Microsoft may release this new version tomorrow, April 10.

Of course, nothing official yet. But what we do know is that Redmond has almost finished development work on this major new upgrade for its OS, and made the RTM builds available for download in the Fast, Slow, and Release Preview rings of the Windows Insider Program.

It’s coming, alright!

And while there are tons of reasons to upgrade to this new variant of the operating system, doing so on day one may be a risky process for some users — particularly professionals and power users that rely on their systems to work day in and day out.

It is not uncommon for major launches like these to cause issues with software, even hardware peripherals. That is why Microsoft rolls out these new versions in stages. This allows the company enough time to iron out any bugs and issues that users experience.

However, if you don’t want to take the risk, there are ways to block the upgrade to the Windows 10 Spring Creators Update.

The first of this involves the dedicated option that Microsoft offers on Windows 10 Pro systems, called deferring updates. Point your system to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Advanced options and then the Choose when updates are installed section.

Here you can choose anywhere between 1 to 365 days, while 0 days would mean Windows 10 would attempt to upgrade as soon as it is offered a new version.

Anyway, since this requires you to be running Windows 10 Pro, there is an even better option for users of the other variants of the OS. One that is more helpful, in that it also helps save storage space.

Simply set your connection to metered by going to Setting > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi and selecting your Internet connection and then toggling the On switch under Metered connection.

This particular setting is aimed at users that are on a limited data plan and don’t want to run out of their data or incur additional costs by having Windows 10 Spring Creators Update be downloaded in the background.

Of course, once you are ready to make the jump turn off these settings and start the installation.

This Windows 10 tutorial shows you how you can disable downloads over metered connection, so that drivers, updates and applications are not downloaded on your device.

Keep this option off is important if you have limited data allowance every month, or have a cellular connection where you are charged for everything you download. Windows 10 will postpone downloads, until you connect to a regular WiFi or network connection.

Here’s how to go about it.

1. Open Settings.

2. Go to Devices.

3. Makes sure that you are in the Bluetooth & other devices section of the panel.

4. Here, uncheck the Download over metered connections checkbox to prevent Windows 10 from downloading data while you are connected to your metered network connection. It will automatically resume the downloads when you connect to your unmeted WiFi.

Color management is the controlled conversion of the color representation of different devices. In other words, how hardware like monitors, TVs, scanners, digital cameras, printers display colors.

Windows 10, just like previous versions of the operating system, comes with some very comprehensive color management capabilities built right in. These can be accessed from the Control Panel, where you can manage your devices and the profiles associated with them.

It’s not for novices, certainly.

But if you do design work or would like your display and printers to output the most accurate colors, you will have to tinker a little in this panel to get what you want.

This is how you can do color management in Windows 10.

1. Open Control Panel.

2. With the Icons view enabled, double-click to open the Color Management panel.

3. You can now select your device, like the display or printer for example, and then associate your chosen profile for use with it. This can be done via the Add… button, and you can also set your profile as default here.

It’s not every day that the good old Control Panel gets new features in Windows, what with the focus now having shifted to the modern Settings app in Windows 10.

In fact, Microsoft is actually moving features and options away from the Control Panel, over to Settings.

But while the port job continues, there still are a lot of handy abilities hidden away in the Control Panel, many of them advanced, while others a lot simpler. Like the ability to open the Folder Options window right from the Control Panel.

Here’s how to go about it.

1. Open Control Panel by searching for it in the Start Menu.

2. Ensure that you are in the Icons view mode. If not, change that by going to the View by: section.

3. Here, simply double-click the File Explorer Options icon to open the panel. It is the same one that you get from the File Explorer, and you can easily modify and update any changes or settings that you see fit for your use.

Privacy conscious? Want to disable ad tracking? Then read on. Windows 10 uses the advertising ID feature that gathers data from your app usage to serve relevant and more interesting ads.

Instead of, you know, regular, run of the mill ones.

However, if you would rather stop this process, then Microsoft has added in simple switch in Settings that lets you disable it. Turning it off will actually reset your ID altogether, meaning a fresh one will be used if you enable it again sometime.

Follow these steps to disable ad tracking in Windows 10.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Click on the Privacy section, and then make sure you are in the General pane.

3. Here, turn off the first option that says Let apps use advertising ID to make ads more interesting to you based on your app usage (turning this off will reset your ID).

4. You will now be served general ads, instead of ones that are personalized specifically for you.
