A few days after one of the tensest elections on US soil in recent memory, Microsoft has put up a blog post congratulating President and Vice President elects, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Calling for a push towards a common goal, policies, and politics separation.

In a long message posted by Microsoft President Brad Smith, the Redmond based company acknowledged that everybody must work together to address the gaps that have lately been created in the country.

“Election Day this year turned into a very long and tense election week, with many Americans glued to their screens anxiously awaiting the outcome. It has been commonplace to hear pundits speculate that we have seldom seemed such a divided country. If true, this also makes a different proposition even more self-evident. If we are to move forward as a nation, we must build new bridges to close the gaps that divide us.”

He further says that Americans share more common ground than most pundits acknowledge, particularly when it comes to technology issues. This makes for an opportunity to separate policies from politics in order to make a real difference in the lives of people.

Additionally, there is also a priority need to work with the rest of the world. While this day may be all about the United States, collaboration with the rest of the world is essential for the country:

“This opportunity to build new bridges extends to the international arena as well. We live in a decade that has started with a virus that respects no border and carbon that moves in the atmosphere not just from country to country, but from continent to continent. More and more of the issues of our day require stronger collaboration between the United States and the rest of the world.”

Wise words.

You can read the entire message published by Microsoft’s President at the link above, and see how he expresses his optimism about the next four years.

Microsoft, and many would say, Nokia are not companies that are overly eager to go in on a specifications race. Instead both emphasize on features, design and the overall experience.

But with Update 3 for Windows Phone 8, Redmond’s mobile platform is more than ready to play with the big boys of the Android world. Not only does the latest version of the mobile OS offers support for quad-core processors, it also brings in support for full HD displays.

And the Nokia Lumia 1520 is not only the latest Windows Phone 8 flagship from the Finnish maker, it is as one of the souped-up smartphone you can get your hands on these days. It also sports the largest screen on a Lumia smartphone up until now.

But the fun does not end here. Nokia has thrown in its Assertive Display technology — which is capable of providing users with a richer and more vibrant experience on the go.

The company talked about this in detail on the Nokia Conversations blog, while saying that is the best screen they have created, as the display on this device works at an individual pixel level, making the screen more readable compared to other mobile devices.

In the words of Jussi Ropo, Nokia Display and Touch technology manager:

“In terms of technology and providing a great experience to our customers, the Nokia Lumia 1520 has the best screen we’ve ever created. Assertive Display is based on how the human visual system works. It processes the image in real time, just as your eye does.”

In simpler terms, the display is optimized to deliver clearer and sharper images regardless of the lighting conditions, as the screen adjusts itself depending on the environment.

Throw in the fact that things are at play on an individual pixel level and the pixels are stimulated differently when content on the screen is darker on one side, then it becomes clear that the company may really be onto something.

It was not all that long ago that text-to-speech technology made its debut. And over the years, the technology has improved by a country mile. Bill Gates and a group of inventors, however, are currently working on something that is a lot more innovative than that.

According to a new report, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, along with Intellectual Ventures co-founder Nathan Myhrvold, and 8 more people have recently filed a patent for a text-to-video technology.

Now you may be thinking converting text to video sounds a bit awkward, but the patent application explains this impressive new technology in elaborate detail:

“According to one contemplated scenario, a student is assigned a reading assignment. To make the assignment more interesting, the student may use his or her mobile phone to take a picture of a page of the textbook. The systems and methods described herein may then generate a synthesized image sequence of the action occurring in the text.

Thus, rather than simply reading names and dates, the student may see soldiers running across a battlefield. The systems and methods may further gather auxiliary information (e.g., the color of the soldiers’ uniforms, the topographical layout of the battlefield, what the generals looked like, time of year, weather conditions, etc.), which may be incorporated into the synthesized image sequences.”

In simpler terms, this means that students can easily take a photo of a page and the application will then create a video that illustrates each and every single word that is mentioned in the text. It may sound simple, but it remains to be seen how it is implemented in the real world.

Nevertheless, the technology is rather advanced in its scope. It is said to even recognize handwriting and also include translation features — this will makes it quite helpful regardless of the language being used.

Better yet, this revolutionary new technology could the green light for production very soon. While no details have been provided for a potential launch date, but word is that Bill Gates is planning to use the new technology for his educational efforts around the world.

Surely, the perfect place to start!

Mobile was long hyped up as a bold new frontier for computing. While some companies understood this early and ran away with success others realized this too late into the game and are now on the back foot with declining sales and decreasing shipment numbers.

Now with wearable computing touted as the new direction, PC makers now want to be in early.

Speaking of which, while several large technology giants (including Microsoft) are said to be actively looking into wearable IT solutions, Google Glass is the first wearable display concept that has truly gained notable traction in the past few months.

This is despite the fact that there are already some wearable computing devices, a few augmented reality glasses on sale from smaller vendors.

But so highly competitive is the technology industry that a bona fide success of even one device can really turn the tables around, and PC makers do not want the initiative to slip by this time around.

According to a new report, most PC brand vendors and OEMs have set up dedicated research and development teams for this — meaning companies like Microsoft, Apple, Samsung, Sony, Epson and HTC will have a lot of competition soon.

Interestingly, PC makers are interested in any and all forms of wearable technology, not just glasses. So don’t be surprised if you find smartwatches, belts, clothing accessories and more flooding the market in the near future.

Asus, however, is one company that is said to take things slow. The reason being its R&D budget is a bit tight at the moment. But all others are ready to jump headfirst into this rapidly developing field.

The Microsoft Research unit has had a fairly busy year. And SIGGRAPH 2013, the 40th International Conference and Exhibition on Computer Graphics and Interactive Technique, has provided the company to showcase what it has been working on.

One brand new technology that Microsoft Research is working on allows users to digitally fix how their hair looks in photos. This is based on a 3D modeling technique that takes care of the entire process.

In short, users are only required to draw a few strands around the areas that they want fixed, and the application does the rest of the job automatically. And as one would expect, the technology analyzes the photos and fills out the strands using realistic hair, matching the one in the original picture.

Lvdi Wang, an associate researcher at the Internet Graphics Group in Microsoft Research Asia explains how this new technology works:

“We proposed a new method for creating a 3-D hair model from just one single photograph or short video. Such a model contains tens of thousands of individual hair strands and allows the user to manipulate hair in images or videos in a structure-preserving and semantically meaningful way.”

The whole process just takes a few seconds, and Microsoft is promising that the technology will be easily accessible for all types of users, including absolute beginners.

The application can also be used to render a virtual hair cut — using only a few clicks in a picture.

Microsoft says that its engineers have been working on this technology for the last year and a half, and this new digital hair manipulation system could soon see daylight in the near future. In fact, don’t be surprised if the company decides to release this as a Windows 8.1 Metro app.

There were times when Microsoft was more interested in plain old software development, but the past few years, Redmond has increased its focus on research manifold. The result is that the company is now on the forefront of several innovative technologies.

One such technology is 3D printing, and Microsoft Research is trying to get this interesting new field one step further with a new project that embeds coded tags into any created objected.

Intuitively called InfraStructs, the prototype that Microsoft Research has just developed eliminates the need for electronic chips or barcodes that are used to protect a particular product.

Microsoft says that using specially created devices, manufacturers can automatically scan the printed object and read its coded tags, thereby saving both time and effort.

The company explained the technology:

“The benefit of such an approach is that manufacturers can embed unique information—serial numbers or even simple programs—in coded tags by designing them as part of the 3-D printed product.

This overcomes the need to insert radio-frequency ID (RFID) tags or electronic chips, which add to manufacturing cost and complexity, or using bar codes, which must be applied externally and are vulnerable to tampering.”

3D printing, although in its infancy, has started to play a much more important role for Microsoft, as the software titan has already announced that it will be bundling support for the technology in its upcoming operating system, Windows 8.1.

Have you ever experienced losing something that seemed impossible to lose? You don’t have any idea how it could have disappeared because you don’t even remember doing anything that could lead to such an occurrence. Like finding out one day that your savings vanished into thin air, only to find out that it was a due to a glitch in your bank account. Or when you realize that your cereal box is already empty after just a bowl for yesterday’s breakfast, only to see rodent droppings nearby. Both situations are really irritating and uncomfortable, but at least you were able to figure out what happened to the things that you’ve lost. You get a general idea of what happened, and you can do something to prevent that from happening again.

<a href=src="https://www.theredmondcloud.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/176713-windowsphone8.jpg" rel="attachment wp-att-14524">

Unfortunately, that’s not the case with Windows Phone 8’s shrinking storage issue for some of its mobile devices. There are a considerable number of affected users taking to the Internet to find out why a chunk of their Windows Phone 8 storage was consumed by an “Other” category. As some of you might notice with other devices, “Other” is usually reserved for files which the device is not capable of reading or running. This could include compressed folders, unrecognized apps, or even corrupted files which are yet to be cleaned from the device’s coffers. So, which one is it? The disturbing part about this issue is that you can’t find what’s causing the problem. You can scour through your device, go through your file explorer over and over again, or test every application installed, and you won’t find a thing. It is not even known if this is caused by a phantom file, a corrupted program, or the Windows Phone 8 just going bonkers.

Issue Confirmed by Microsoft

When affected users took to the web to air their grievances and look for answers, one person went directly to the source by tweeting Microsoft’s Corporate VP for Windows Phone Program Management and Design, Mr Joe Belfiore. Belfiore confirmed that the issue does exist, but gave no clue on what could be causing it, aside from suggesting to turn-off Skydrive auto-photo upload. Well, we know that the Internet is an integral aspect of mobile devices today, allowing us to do anything from bank transactions, online shopping, to VoIP calls anywhere, anytime. But by anchoring all our activities to the web, including the simple tasks like uploading our photos to the cloud, issues like these are really bound to happen.

It is hard not to blame Microsoft; after all, they’re the ones behind the Windows Phone 8 operating system. When we decided to part ways with our money for their phones and tablets, we’re buying into the idea that we are getting an infallible device. We really don’t think about the possible issues or problems that could arise after our purchase, considering that their gadgets costs top dollar. But no system is perfect, and Microsoft, despite its success in tech and electronics, has its fair share of failures.

We should at least expect them to act fast and find a fix for this problem, and that’s what Belfiore promised when he confirmed the issue. He promised improvements coming in future updates, hopefully addressing the storage-zapping phantom on their mobile devices. But for those who are desperate to reclaim their “lost” storage space, a free application has emerged from the Windows Phone apps store. Shrink Storage tries to get more from your device by completely filling up your internal storage and restarting your phone to release some storage. It’s worth a try, since there’s no definite time for the next potent update that would address this issue.

To be fair with Microsoft, they were able to come up with an impressive line of phones and tablets, attracting the interest of modern techies and gadget lovers worldwide. We should be optimistic that they’ll come up with an answer to their problems soon, and look forward to more Windows Phone 8 devices in the near future.
